Oates was an unrestricted free agent and had been unsigned since the end of last season's Stanley Cup Finals. He had 9 goals and 36 assists last season for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In 18 NHL seasons, he has over 1,200 games played, 1,000 assists, and 1,400 points.
