Cricket Hill Brewery event rescheduled for Wednesday, August 9th.

The Rensselaer Club of New Jersey had originally scheduled a tour of the Cricket Hill Brewery in Fairfield, NJ for Thursday, August 10th.

I visited with Cricket Hill's owner Rick Reed on Friday evening, and he had some very good news. His distributor in Pennsylvania needed a large amount of beer in short order to satisfy his customers. Unfortunately, it did not mesh with our original plans for the brewery tour.

Given this news, we have rescheduled this event for Wednesday, August 9th at 6pm, when weekly bottling will take place. Feel free to join us on Wednesday at 24 Kulick Road in Fairfield, or visit the brewery's website. Contact me if you need directions or have any other questions.

Mr. Reed gives a fine talk about his beer, and the beer and snacks are free. Do join us if you have the opportunity to do so!

Third Period Comeback Helps RPI Tie Princeton

The Rensselaer men's hockey team stormed back with two goals in the last 12 minutes of the third period to tie Princeton 4-4 last night at Baker Rink. Both teams played well throughout the game, although the momentum clearly swung from RPI to Princeton and back to RPI over the course of regulation time.

The Engineers took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Oren Eizenman and Chris Hussey. Patrick Neunborfer scored for Princeton with 2:53 left in the first to narrow the Tigers deficit to one goal. Princeton increasingly had the momentum in the second period, with goals by Kevin Westgarth and Darroll Powe-- both in the last three minutes of the period.

It looked bad for RPI when Sebastian Borza scored his first goal of the season with 17:57 left in regulation to make the score 4-2 Princeton. But Keith MCWilliams scored a power play goal about six minutes later to make it close.

With about six minutes left in the third period, Kurt Colling picked up the puck off a turnover, and fed it to Kevin Croxton who sped in on a semi-breakaway. Croxton's shot rebounded off of Princeton goalie Eric Leroux and went high in the air before landing in the crease area behind the goalie. The puck trickled over the goal line after it hit Leroux a second or third time. The linesman actually made the call that the puck had entered the goal, because the referee had been caught behind the play due to the Princeton turnover.

The remaining six minutes of regulation time and five minutes of overtime were scoreless. The teams played even hockey and aggressively tried to score on each other. Rensselaer arguably had the best chance in overtime when it was down a man due to a penalty late in the third period that carried over. A Princeton defenseman picked up the puck behind his own net and rushed a pass intended for a teammate that went off an agressive Engineer forechecker and nearly went into Princeton's goal.

Both goalies played very good games. Eric Leroux made 25 saves for Princeton. Mattias Lange saved 33 for RPI.

The Engineers remain in seventh place in the ECACHL, one point behind Union and one point ahead of Clarkson. They move on to play Quinnipiac tonight at 7pm

RCNJ Members Receive Tour of George Washington Bridge

RCNJ atop the George Washington Bridge

On Friday August 6, several RCNJ leadership committee members were treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour of the
world's busiest bridge, the George Washington Bridge. Approximately 300,000 cars travel over the bridge each day.

The RCNJ tour group consisted of RCNJ President Sandeep Nandy '94, Vice President John Cloninger '96, Chairman Ken DeGhetto '50, Treasurer Phil Lurie '74, Past President Dave Aiello '89, Henry Rosenblatt '54 and Nabil Nahra '82. The tour guides from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were John Drobny, Mike Degidio and Kevin Vesely. Each of three gentlemen were very knowledgeable, patient and friendly.

The morning began with breakfast at the Port Authority Headquarters in Fort Lee, NJ. After this, the tour group was escorted to the East tower of the bridge (New York side). Through the use of special elevators and ladders, the group climbed to the top of the tower. This was approximately 600 feet above river level and 400 feet above deck level. The views were amazing and the experience can be labeled as "once-in-a-lifetime."

Following this, the group returned to road level and had lunch at Napoli's restaurant in Fort Lee, NJ. After lunch, the RCNJ group was permitted to see the communications/control room. RCNJ President Nandy '94 is currently in negotiations with the Port Authority for a future tour in April, 2005 of the bridge for a larger group. This tour would be different than the one described here. Please continue to visit RCNJ.org for further details about the April, 2005 tour.

Special thanks to Ken DeGhetto '50 for making all the arrangements with the Port Authority which allowed the RCNJ tour group to attend.

New Jersey Alumni Support Division I Hockey at Rensselaer with a Stick Signing

Shirley Jackson, Sandeep Nandy, and Dave Aiello with hockey sticksAt the alumni reception that took place on October 21 in Morristown, members of the Rensselaer Club of New Jersey presented two signed hockey sticks to President Shirley Ann Jackson to demonstrate support for Division I ice hockey at Rensselaer.

The NCAA Division III Presidents' Council proposed the elimination of scholarship awards at Division III schools that "play up" to Division I in one sport. If this proposal is approved by a vote of Division III athletic directors at a meeting in January, the Rensselaer's men's ice hockey program would lose the ability to grant scholarships.

This proposal has provoked a loud response from the eight schools that would be affected. Dr. Jackson issued a statement opposing the proposal back in August, and the Rensselaer Alumni Association has urged alumni to express their opposition to the proposal.

This stick signing was an attempt to demonstrate this opposition in a unique way. Over 100 alumni attended the reception and participated in the stick signing.

Pictured here, left to right, are RCNJ Past President Dave Aiello '89, Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson, and RCNJ Vice President Sandeep Nandy '94. This photograph was taken by John Cloninger '96.

President Jackson Speaks about the "Renaissance at Rensselaer" in Morristown

Shirley Ann JacksonOn Tuesday, the Rensselaer Office of Alumni Relations and the RCNJ held an Alumni Reception keynoted by Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson. Dr. Jackson gave an entertaining presentation entitled Renaissance at Rensselaer.

President Jackson's talk focused on the new campus facilities that are now under construction on the Troy campus, including the Biotechnology & Interdisciplinary Research Center and a 500 car parking garage on College Avenue. She also showed a number of photos of the construction in progress, making the progress more real for alumni who had not yet seen it.

Dr. Jackson also pointed out that the first year class, the Class of 2007 is a record breaking class in a number of important ways:

  • 1,356 students
  • 325 women
  • 315 Rensselaer Medalists
  • 88 legacies

Dr. Jackson rightly pointed out that "the Class of 2007 is an affirmation of the renaissance taking place at Rensselaer."

Later in the program, RCNJ Vice President Sandeep Nandy '94 discussed recent achievements of the chapter, upcoming alumni events, and urged alumni who have not taken part in our events in the past to join us. Nandy then presented
